Practical Placement

What is Practical Placement?

  • Practical Placement involves you, the student, participating in on the job work experience
  • Your Practical Placement forms an important component of your VCAL studies and will require you to complete a work diary  and work related assignments that will help you achieve your VCAL outcomes
  • When going out on Practical Placement  you are required to have a Practical Placement  contract signed by yourself, your parent / guardian, the employer and by the GTEC principal.  This contract is a Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (State of Victoria) requirement, and shall cover you for public liability insurance while on Practical Placement.

When does an Practical Placement happen?

  • On completion of certain classroom requirements and once a suitable employer has been found, you shall attend Practical Placement  on a regular basis that will be included in your VCAL timetable. The aim of GTEC is to have all students ready to commence Practical Placement by end of first term.

Why do we do it?

  • By doing Practical Placement your ultimate goal is to secure an Australian School-based Apprenticeship (ASbA), and by doing work placement under Practical Placement it allows you to have the opportunity to work and train with an employer and to develop a good work ethic and enhance your employability skills.
  • By doing Practical Placement and completing your work diary there will be some VCAL outcomes achieved.
  • You are able develop a work history in your chosen trade as well as develop and practice skills developed at trade school.

What is a work diary and why do I need to fill one out?

  • The work diary is to document any training and new skills you learn on the job. You will need to fill out the diary at the end of each day while out on work placement, in addition to getting your employer to sign that what you have done is true and correct.
  • The work diary is a really important tool for you, as it in many instances it will enable you to demonstrate that you have achieved outcomes on the job that can be matched up with VCAL and trade school competencies.
  • By keeping your diary up to date it, you will have an up to date work folio that you can use when trying to secure an Australian School-based Apprenticeship (ASbA).
