Accommodation

Page Content

The Gordon International office can assist you with Homestay accommodation and placement at the Student Residence.

Accommodation arrangements are free for students holding a Student Visa and are enrolled for a course of 20 weeks or more. There is an arrangement fee of AUD$250 for students studying 19 weeks or less.

International students are also welcome to locate their own accommodation while studying at the Gordon Institute.

The accommodation choices available to International students are:

Homestay

A popular choice with international students is 'homestay', which is accommodation with a private family in the Geelong area. Homestay is a safe, secure and friendly family environment and is recommended for students who wish to find out more about the Australian lifestyle and culture.

Most homestay accommodation is located only 15 minutes by bus from the city campus. In homestay, you have a single room and share the rest of the house with other members of the family.

All homestay accommodation is organised by an external company (not Gordon Institute of TAFE) called Student Accommodation Services (SAS). For further information please refer to their website www.student-accommodation.com.au. If you wish to apply for Homestay, tick the appropriate box in the accommodation section of your application and a Homestay Application form will be sent to you. After applying, SAS will allocate a homestay family for you and send you a Homestay Profile that will outlined key information about your host family.

Sharing a flat or house

You can sign a lease with an estate agent or directly with the landlord for rental accommodation. Some places are furnished, but it is more common to rent an unfurnished flat (also known as a unit) or house.
We encourage you to visit the Tenants Union of Victoria website. This is a site for residential tenants living in Victoria, Australia who require information on their legal rights and community resources.
Private rent ranges from A$100 - A$120 per week per room when the accommodation is being shared by two people. In both houses and flats, house members share the cost of utilities such as electricity, gas and water. Married couples, with or without children, would need to consider flats or a smaller house on the private market. A smaller houses or unit may cost AUD$200 or more per week.
