Alumni profile - Katie Fiorillo

The Gordon TAFE celebrates 130 years in 2017. So each month, we‘re introducing some of the faces that have studied with us over the years to share where they are today, and how they got there.

Name: Katie Fiorillo
Studied: Photography and Advanced Photoshop
Year: 2012
Now: Multi award winning professional Family & Newborn Photographer and owner of Sugar Images.

Why did you choose to study your particular course/industry area?

I have always had a passion for photography and arts, After the birth of my third son I decided it was time to invest in my future with something that I am passionate about and love.

What did you enjoy most about studying with
The Gordon? What is one of your favourite memories from your time at The Gordon?

I loved my time at The Gordon, It seemed to go so quickly!
I enjoyed being able to enrol into a course that suited me and that I knew I would gain the most knowledge from.

I really enjoyed the facilities the Gordon has to offer, they are up to date with the latest technologies and teaching methods.

I found my teacher really easy going yet very professional and encouraging.

How did The Gordon help shape your career/prepare you for your career?

The Gordon helped create a pathway for my educational future as a Professional Photographer, the skills and techniques I learnt are incredibly valuable and something that I still use to this day in my job.

Did you undertake any further study after The Gordon? If yes, what and where did this lead you?

Yes, I furthered my education by attending Newborn workshops to better educate myself in working safely with newborns. I travelled interstate for 1.1 mentoring and also attended workshops in Melbourne.

I became a fully accredited Professional Photographer with The Australian Institute of Professional Photography – AIPP.

I began entering our national and state awards and won multiple awards and two very prestigious titles; 2015 AIPP Victorian Professional Family Photographer of the Year, 2016 AIPP Victorian Professional Newborn Photographer of The Year and the 2017 AIPP Victorian Professional Newborn Photographer of The Year Finalist.

What does your current job involve/what does an average day look like?

I am the owner and photographer of Sugar Images, I specialise in Maternity, Newborn and Baby photography.

My job involves capturing and creating memories for my clients to treasure forever, I freeze time in my photographs that will only come once.

My average day is ensuring my studio is cosy and warm, my equipment is organised and tidy and my working environment is safe and calm.

I believe I have the best job in the world, I mean who wouldn’t love cuddling newborn babies all day?!

What key skills do you need in your role/career/industry?

Safety, safety safety … newborn photographers must be safe at all times when working with babies.

Hygiene, handling/posing newborns, working with children’s certificates and being fully vaccinated is paramount in working with babies.

Education in working with babies is extremely important, ensure you are up to date with your skills and training in safely working with newborns.

What do you find most rewarding about your job/what are you most proud of in your career?

Seeing the smile on my clients face when they see their baby in my studio for their newborn photos, the tears of joy and heart-warming response is simply beautiful.

The rewarding part of my job is defiantly watching my client’s families grow, when they come back in as their child grows for more photos and when they come in expecting another baby.

This makes me so happy!

If you could pass on one piece of wisdom to those currently making study and career decisions, what would it be?

Follow your dreams. Be passionate for the career you choose, you can do anything you set your mind to and BELIEVE in yourself! It takes time to do great things, do it greatly and you will achieve everything.
