Alumni profile - Ryan Chamley

The Gordon TAFE celebrates 130 years in 2017. So each month, we‘re introducing some of the faces that have studied with us over the years to share where they are today, and how they got there.

Name: Ryan Chamley
Studied: Screen and Media
Year: 2006
Now: Owner/Director of Robot Army Productions

Why did you choose to study screen and media?

I’d always loved digital media – everything from imaging, web design and especially video. I was unhappy working in retail but thought I was too old to study – I also worried it wouldn’t be viable with a young family. When I found out The Gordon offered a course where I could study everything I was passionate about and I looked at the career pathways, I decided to jump at the opportunity!

What did you enjoy most about your time at The Gordon?

I loved how hands-on it was. One of my favourite experiences was making my first short film! It was a Star Wars fan film and I asked the teachers to show me things that were a bit more advanced.

"That’s something I love about The Gordon - the teaching staff are so approachable and love helping further your skills when you show the initiative."

What led you to start your own business?

After I graduated, I went straight to full-time work with a production company in Melbourne. I was there for three years, before starting Robot Army with a good friend Stu Ross. We’ve now been in business for 5 years, and have grown to having a team of 6 professionals and a substantial client base.

What does an average day look like for you?

Very busy! My general role is scriptwriting, directing and editing, but I also oversee projects the team are working on. Each day is different which I love - I could be in our studio one day coming up with concepts for a client, writing our own films and shows, pitching to potential clients or on set in a remote location fighting the weather.

How did The Gordon prepare you for the career you have today?

It gave me the chance to develop my own style and do things my own way, but also gave a solid, practical foundation in the software I still use to this day.

What do you find most rewarding about your job?

When something we release gets a good response! It’s awesome after months of hard work, stress and sometimes self-doubt to finally say, “Yes! It’s done!” and then enjoy the feedback!

Can you tell us about your proudest career moment so far?

We created a web series called Rostered On, and since its release some of the scenes have been viewed more than 150 million times! It’s gone viral on multiple facebook pages and we have hit 100,000 youtube subscribers. It’s amazing that people all over the world have enjoyed something we wrote and produced independently.

If you could pass on one piece of wisdom to those currently making study and career decisions, what would it be?

Follow your gut. Don’t be swayed by what others say or think you should do. Do what you love and what you are passionate about, and you will find a way to make it work.
