Alumni profile - Ryan Thompson

The Gordon TAFE celebrates 130 years in 2017. So each month, we‘re introducing some of the faces that have studied with us over the years to share where they are today, and how they got there.

Name: Ryan Thompson
Studied: Certificate III in Sports Turf Management
Year: 2016
Now: Intern at the Ohio State University Global Intern Program

Why did you choose to study your course at The Gordon?

This was the best course to help me get onto the best cricket fields in Australia.
I’d heard great reviews from past students: good (new) facilities to study in, and passionate teachers who want to see you advance in the profession.

Where are you currently working and what does your job involve?

I’m currently in America, sponsored by the Ohio State University Global Intern Program. Each year they recruit approximately 400 of the best graduating apprentices from around the globe. They have a strong relationship with The Gordon, which ensured I was placed on a ‘top 100’ golf course. I work as part of a team that prepares courses for the best players in the world. The role brings huge pressure to perform and long hours, but a great sense of pride and satisfaction when the job is done.

What key skills do you need to succeed in turf management?

Attention to detail is critical in my job! Literally every blade of grass is expected to be in place. As well as the obvious hands-on skills, good people skills are incredibly important. Being able to network, be sociable and look like a professional every day is vital to success. A clean cut image is important in this industry and being young, I’ve found people listen to me more when I look professional.

What are your favourite memories from The Gordon?

Being around good students who were motivated and wanted to get ahead. I really enjoyed the practicals and site visits to see real world examples of what we were learning. It was also nice to be around teachers who enjoyed their role and wanted students to succeed.

How has The Gordon prepared you for the career you have so far?

The Gordon gave me the tools to succeed. Their resources and networks around the world is what makes them the best. I need real skills and world class experience to achieve my goals, and The Gordon has provided that.

What are the most exciting or rewarding aspects of your role?

Being put under pressure and producing the goods! I enjoy a challenge and the satisfaction that comes from achievement. I’ve received some great feedback from the best players in the world, including Adam Scott, so I know I can have pride in a job well done.

What are your future career goals?

My absolute dream job would be curator of the MCG, or a similar high profile venue. I can handle pressure well and want to move into management so I can take responsibility and ownership of all that is involved. I want to keep growing and maintain the same sense of pride I have now in my job

"Being able to network, be sociable and look like a professional every day is vital to success"
