Local primary school students try fine dining at The Gordon

The Gordon TAFE recently hosted over 300 primary school students as part of Ardoch Youth Foundations Learning through Lunch program in The Gordon’s Davidson Restaurant.
Grade five students from across the Northern Bay school region were treated to a yummy two course lunch as they practiced their social skills in a formal setting with members of Rotary and other corporate sponsors.
The sponsors sat with the children and actively encouraged conversations with them to help give students the confidence to comfortably speak with adults. Students were given a manners checklist and a 'how to use cutlery' demonstration before they attended.
The project focuses on manners, behaviour, conversation, respect, politeness and etiquette; exploring tastes, making choices and decision, and dining was the chosen medium used to develop these skills. Placing young diners in a social setting where they may feel out of their comfort zone, with people as mentors was part of the intent. Almost all of the children who participated had never been to a restaurant before.
This program has been running since 2012 and has been a memorable experience for the students involved.
