Life after TAFE – Meet our Gordon graduate, Dale.

Dale Hill Forest Fire ManagementIt never ceases to surprise us the amazing and wonderful careers our students pursue once they complete their training here at The Gordon. And Dale is no exception. With a Diploma of Conservation and Land Management, Dale’s career has been nothing short of adventurous.

Working three seasons as a Project Fire Fighter in Mansfield, Dale’s introduction saw her deployed across the State numerous times. Encountering busy bushfire seasons, Dale spent time in Horsham, Lorne, Portland, Gippsland and Tallangatta, accumulating quite a few flying hours when choppered into fires. A role clearly not for the feint hearted, Dale shared some insights into the career she absolutely loves, “While flying into fires is always fun, it also comes with the knowledge that you’re in for a very long hard shift, where sometimes it’s easier to crawl up and slide down on your behind when hiking in such steep and remote terrain.”

With numerous opportunities on the horizon, Dale has worked stints in Incident Management Teams during fires, and at the beginning of the year was chosen to be the Fuel Moisture Readings Coordinator for Mansfield.

While the job itself is personally very rewarding, Dale and her colleagues were awarded recognition badges for the 2018/19 fire season for their brave and tireless work. You can gain an insight into forest fire management works by checking out the Forest Fire Management Victoria Facebook page.

Dale Hill Forest Fire ManagementNow stationed in Bendigo, Dale is working with the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, as a Project Officer for Victoria’s Great Outdoors in the Loddon Mallee region. Dale’s role is part of Victoria's $105.6 million Great Outdoors Program that builds and upgrades tracks, trails, campgrounds and caravan parks throughout Victoria, making it easier for people to get out and support regional tourism as they explore nature.
