Jennifer's continued success as a Vet Nurse

Jennifer Peart

Vet Nurse

You may have seen some stories on Jennifer's previous successes. We caught up with her recently to find out what she was up to now.

"Since completing my studies I now find myself working full time as a Veterinary Nurse at Werribee’s U-Vet animal hospital in the Small Animal Referral Medicine Department. Having previously worked in general practice nursing, I now find myself in a specialist division of animal care, where I not only assist in specialist medicine procedures and work to a high level of patient care, but also continue to learn and gain skills in amazing animal treatments and life saving care. Being in a specialist division in one of Victoria’s best veterinary clinics, I am lucky enough to work with amazingly knowledgeable and skilled vets and nurses who continue to help me on my path of learning and development.

During my time at The Gordon I worked hard at my studies and was rewarded and recognised being awarded the 2015 Marion and Ernie Scholarship Recipient, and then also receiving the Presidents Medal for Most Outstanding Student. However, my journey didn't end there, also interviewing and receiving the 2016 Victorian Vocational Student of the Year at the Victorian Training Awards.
After winning the Victorian award I was invited to the Australian Awards in Darwin and spent time with amazing students across the Vocational Training Sector. I came Runner Up Australian Vocational Student of the year.

Since receiving this award and becoming a VET ambassador I have attended conferences and advocated for vocational training pathways through public speaking, using my story to show just how beneficial studying and learning through TAFE can be.

Recently I attended a conference in Canberra with other VET ambassadors and collaborated ideas for how to promote and improve vocational training. We toured parliament and met with training ministers to ensure our ideas could be turned into actions. I have also been lucky enough to attend the hills veterinary nursing conference in Tasmania and continued to build on the foundation of veterinary nursing knowledge I have learnt at The Gordon.

I have recently completed my Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40116) at The Gordon. I want to share my knowledge as an industry current nurse in the classroom and provide the animal studies and upcoming vet nursing students with current, first hand information.

My goals for the future are to continue learning and studying in order to better my abilities in animal care, as well as using my VET ambassador role to help upcoming nursing and TAFE students to find their path and passion like I did.

I am more than half way through my science degree at Deakin and am combining this with working hands-on at a veterinary clinic - which completing a TAFE course has allowed me to do."
