The Gordon teamed up with the Master Builders Association of Victoria (MBAV) to take local secondary school students on a bus tour to get a behind-the-scenes look at a range of trade careers available in a booming industry.
The free event for Years 9-12 students toured domestic and commercial building sites across the Geelong region.
Local MBAV members and employers explained to the students about the role trades play in our community, the types of vocational requirements and opportunities a career in the trades offers. Students then had the chance to ask tradespeople and construction workers about their own experiences and career journeys.
All Aboard.
Stops included a Hamlan Homes’ townhouse development in Newtown, and the City of Greater Geelong’s Highton Enhanced Children’s Centre being built by Lyons Construction.
Norm Lyons of Lyons Construction said “the program is timely in the current climate of the building & construction industry’s skills and trade shortages in the Geelong area.”
“Increasing young people’s knowledge about job opportunities and the diversity of occupations in the construction industry is a community responsibility that local master builders and The Gordon take seriously. We are committed to growing this initiative so the students, industry and trades all benefit,” continued Mr Lyons.
Hamlan Homes, Lyons Construction, ABBTF, Walkers Plaster & Tiles, Caruso Bricklaying, JM Homes, Austral Bricks and Signature Homes gave support to the day.
The tour finished up at The Gordon for a BBQ lunch where students got to inspect the construction trade training facilities of the East Geelong Campus.
What a great day out!
