Course description

Individual support now has two specialisations, disability and ageing. If you want to study both (as a dual qualification), contact us here. The duration of the course will be the same, just an additional day per week will be required.

You can choose to do either stream or both* to improve your employment opportunities.

This course prepares you for work with the elderly or people with disabilities in the community or residential setting.

The five-month course delivered over 3 days (4 days if you choose the dual stream) is designed in consultation with industry. It includes theory and hands-on learning with organised work placement (see below) . Classes are delivered with a combination of Online and Face to Face classroom delivery.

You will:

  • learn to communicate and work in health or community services,
  • provide individualised support
  • recognise healthy body systems
  • work with diverse people
  • support independence and wellbeing
  • follow safe work practices
  • and work legally and ethically.

* The dual stream course is offered for domestic students only

  • The traineeship is offered for ageing and disability steams. All prospective trainee needs to find a host (employer to do the traineeship with) who will then contact the apprentice and trainees team.
  • The Cert III is a pre-requisite and can be a pathway into the Cert IV in disability.

Work placement/industry experience

120 hours of work placement is required in this course, organised by The Gordon. You will complete placement over 4 weeks, for 3-4 days per week. Hours will be either be from 7.00am - 3.00pm or 3.00pm - 9.00pm. A current police check is required. Uniform is suitable neat attire, including a shirt, black pants and flat non-slip shoes. *Please note that you may be required to travel outside of your usual training location to attend placement. This may include other regional areas or suburbs of Melbourne. As per worker vaccination requirements , all applicants for this course must be triple vaccinated (boosted) against COVID-19 prior to undertaking placement which is a requirement for completion of this course. Students are required to provide evidence of full vaccination status, including booster dose, as part of their placement documentation which is provided to placement facilities. Students that cannot provide valid evidence will not be able to complete placement and therefore unable to complete this course. Traineeship: 1 day per month | Monday | 9:00am - 3:30pm

Off Campus: Only available to Northern Futures students.

Blended attendance is a timetabled combination of remote and face to face class delivery.

  • Applicants must be 16 years and over at the time of course commencement.
  • Applicants are expected to have literacy skills at Year 11 or Year 12 or Australian Core Skills Framework Level 3 and numeracy skills at Year 10 or Year 11 or Australian Core Skills Framework Level 2.
  • Any student under the age of 17 must provide an Exemption from School form prior to undertaking the course.

  • You must reside in Victoria to access Victorian Government Subsidised Fees and any incentive such as Free TAFE. Full fees apply to all non-Victorian residents.

Work placement requirements

  • Students are required to provide evidence of full vaccination status, including booster dose, as part of their placement documentation which is provided to placement facilities.  
  • A Police Check is required for industry work placement. Note: any disclosable offences need to be advised pre-course commencement as these items may affect your ability to undertake a work placement.

Apprenticeship and traineeship requirements

Apprenticeship and traineeship applicants must be currently employed under a training contract and referred by their employer.

Pre-training review

Each student must complete a pre-training review as part of their application. The outcome of your pre-training review assists our teachers and trainers to better understand your capabilities prior to training and enables you to be matched to the right program. Your literacy and numeracy skills will be evaluated and you may be required to undertake a separate assessment. Follow this link for more information about literacy and numeracy skills .

In order to prepare for your LLN, you may wish to attempt some practise tests in which you will find similar questions (with solutions too). These practice tests are not VSL approved but may be similar in question type and level of difficulty to what may be asked in the VSL approved LLN. Click here for practice tests. Please note, the VSL approved LLN cannot be resat within 3 months of undertaking it.

Please note that the listed electives are delivered by The Gordon but you may not need to complete all of these units to successfully complete this qualification. If you have previously completed any of the units of competency relevant to this course, you may be eligible for Credit Transfer (CT).
