Course description

Would you like to be a vital team member in the medical profession? Then this course is for you! Sterile processing technicians work hard to prevent infections and other possible medical complications. They are so vital that most modern medical facilities would have difficulty functioning without them.

During this course, you will learn how to manage the sterilisation of equipment in a sterilisation service or reprocessing area, along with infection prevention and control policies and procedures, workplace health and safety, and how to interpret and apply medical terminology appropriately.

Work placement/industry experience

Work placement is required in this course, organised by the Gordon. You will attend 1 day per week, over 19 weeks and placement will occur at a local hospital. A current and approved Police Check dated in the year of your course, is required.For the duration of the clinical placement, all students should ideally have: · Immunity to hepatitis B, influenza, measles, mumps, pertussis, rubella, varicella; and · No active tuberculosis infection *Please note that you may be required to travel outside of your usual training location to attend placement. This may include other regional areas or suburbs of Melbourne. As per worker vaccination requirements , all applicants for this course must be triple vaccinated (boosted) against COVID-19 prior to undertaking placement which is a requirement for completion of this course. Students are required to provide evidence of full vaccination status, including booster dose, as part of their placement documentation which is provided to placement facilities. Students that cannot provide valid evidence will not be able to complete placement and therefore unable to complete this course.

  • Applicants are expected to have literacy skills at Year 11 or Year 12 or Australian Core Skills Framework Level 3 and numeracy skills at Year 10 or Year 11 or Australian Core Skills Framework Level 2.

  • You must reside in Victoria to access Victorian Government Subsidised Fees and any incentive such as Free TAFE. Full fees apply to all non-Victorian residents.

  • For the duration of the clinical placement, all students should ideally have:

Apprenticeship and traineeship requirements

Apprenticeship and traineeship applicants must be currently employed under a training contract and referred by their employer.

Pre-training review

Each student must complete a pre-training review as part of their application. The outcome of your pre-training review assists our teachers and trainers to better understand your capabilities prior to training and enables you to be matched to the right program. Please note that the listed electives are delivered by The Gordon but you may not need to complete all of these units to successfully complete this qualification. If you have previously completed any of the units of competency relevant to this course, you may be eligible for Credit Transfer (CT).
