MSL30118 VETDSS - Certificate III in Laboratory Skills

Course description

*At the completion of this VETDSS course students will gain a partial qualification only.

Are you currently attending secondary school, love science and want to work in a laboratory where you will use microscopes and learn various lab techniques? Then this course is for you!

Laboratory skills give students hands-on experience in scientific techniques by working in a simulated laboratory. You will use current industry procedures and learn how to collect samples for testing, prepare laboratory solutions, handle bacteria and use high performance equipment in our microbiology, chemistry and general purpose laboratories. This course will also cover work, health and safety, communications skills and quality systems in laboratories. When you complete the course, you may gain credit towards your VCE.

Work placement/industry experience

10 days of work placement over two years is strongly recommended. This may occur during the term holidays.

The sourcing of placement will be the joint responsibility of the secondary school, the student and the Local Learning and Employment Network.

Possible career outcomes

The Gordon is committed to ensuring all students have access to the educational and support services they may need while studying. We do this by carrying out a pretraining review that is integrated with the application and enrolment process. For most courses, this review also includes a short literacy and numeracy assessment relevant to the course. The outcomes of the pretraining review assist our teachers and trainers to better understand each student’s capabilities prior to training and enable all students to be matched to the right program for them.

Applicants are expected to have an appropriate literacy and numeracy level equivalent to the successful completion of year 9.

Personal Learning Requirements

There are personal learning requirements for each qualification at The Gordon. These are essential personal capabilities and skills required to successfully complete the course and be ready to work in the industry.

Please review the requirements here and consider any challenges you may have in meeting them. When applying for your course, please let us know what support you may need.
