Combine your TAFE and industry training

As an apprentice, you get the best of both worlds; learning on-the-job from your employer as well as from our specialist trainers at TAFE. Our campuses at East Geelong and Hoppers Crossing are home to world-class trade facilities with courses designed by industry bodies, to give you the latest skills and knowledge being used in your trade.

Are you an employer?

We support thousands of apprentices each year thanks to our flexible, practical and workplace-based approach to training.

We recognise that every business is different, and the need to have your apprentice on-site can change from week to week and from business to business. Our flexible approach to trade training allows either a small or substantial amount of on-campus training and assessment. This means programs can be tailored to meet the needs of you and your apprentices.

Profiles and Testimonials

“I work with Spence Construction in Colac who prefer to send all their apprentices to The Gordon.

As an apprentice, The Gordon has provided me with opportunities to work on specific skill development outside of my workplace. As a result, I have learnt a bunch of new skills, and had great experiences like the WorldSkills competitions. The facilities at The Gordon are more advanced and modern than the workplace and you get to work on different projects all the time, which makes it interesting.”

"I chose cabinet making as a career path as I enjoyed woodwork during my school years. The Gordon taught me about hard work and the benefits that come with putting in that little bit extra, and I've been given the opportunity to travel around Australia and overseas to compete in national and international competitions.

The teachers are passionate about what they teach, and have played a big role in what I was able to achieve throughout my apprenticeship.

My career goal is to own my own business, specialising in custom pieces of wooden furniture and homewares. I am currently on track to also complete a Certificate IV in Small Business Management to help me step into the role of being a small business owner."

Kate Elstone
Certificate III in Cabinet Making

“I always enjoyed building, and seeing my friends learn the trade and enjoy their work inspired me to enter the industry. I took the first step by enrolling in a carpentry pre-apprenticeship at The Gordon. I knew this would give me the basic skills for the industry, and improve my chances of finding an employer.

The Gordon facilities are excellent and the teachers all currently work in the industry so they are a great source of knowledge and knew exactly what we needed to learn.

I’m now employed as a full-time apprentice with CC Home Improvements. The pre-apprenticeship gave me enough skills to take straight onto the job site and be confident in what I was able to do. I’m looking forward to completing my apprenticeship and becoming a fully qualified carpenter.”
