Visa 457 - Training Benchmark A

Information for Employers

The Gordon is listed as a registered training organisation with a recognised scholarship fund that supports contributions from employers to enable them to meet the requirements of Training Benchmark A.

Training Benchmark A

If you are a business that has been operating for over 12 months, and you are sponsoring someone for a subclass 457 Visa, you are required to meet a ‘training benchmark’ to demonstrate your commitment to supporting the education and training of Australian citizens and permanent residents.

To meet the requirements of Training Benchmark A, employers pay 2% of payroll expenditure (incurred over 12 months) to an industry training fund or a recognised scholarship fund for each fiscal year of sponsoring in order to support the education and training of Australian citizens.

The Gordon can help by offering an established scholarship program that supports education and training for Australian citizens and permanent residents through nationally accredited courses across a variety of vocational areas.

How do I contribute?

Businesses interested in contributing to Training Benchmark A will be required to email a completed 457 Visa Donation Form, to the Student Scholarships and Welfare Coordinator at scholarships@gordontafe.edu.au

Once received the funds will be held in a scholarship account set up by the Gordon until they are awarded to the successful scholarship recipient/s. Contributions are valid for 12 months and will be fully distributed during this time to coincide with the academic year in which the training is being undertaken. Businesses will receive an official Gordon receipt indicating that the funds will be used as a scholarship donation to a recognised scholarship fund, to comply with Training Benchmark A requirements. Businesses will also be sent a letter thanking them for their contribution, and outlining how the donation will be spent towards supporting their nominated vocational training area through the Gordon’s scholarship program.

Administration of Scholarship

The scholarship will be managed by the Student Scholarship and Welfare Coordinator at The Gordon, with selection being undertaken by a scholarship selection panel consisting of Gordon staff members, and at least one representative from the course area the sponsoring business is most closely related to.
Selection criteria for the scholarship will meet the requirements of Training Benchmark A by ensuring the scholarship is awarded to a student who is:

  • an Australian citizen or an Australian permanent resident
  • training in a course related to the sponsoring employer’s business
  • enrolled for in a course for a minimum period of 12 months

Applications for the scholarship will be conducted online through the Gordon website annually, and will be open to all students who meet the above selection criteria as well the standards set by the Gordon’s own scholarship benchmarks, which include:

  • some degree of financial hardship
  • strong commitment to succeed in studies and find employment
  • full or part time enrolment in a certificate, diploma or advanced diploma course

Application dates will coincide with enrolments, and all students will be required to submit an application (including documents to support their application), and two referee contacts.
