Student Support Fund

Assisting students in need...

How you can help

Company and individual donations are welcome. Donations of as little as $2 per fortnight can make a difference to the number of students we are able to assist each year. Make a donation to the Student Support Fund here.

SSF Background

The Student Support Fund was established in 1987 as a consequence of events that occurred following the closure of International Harvester in 1982, which saw a modest amount of money remaining in a union workers committee account.

Many of the unemployed workers came to The Gordon to retrain and re-skill and the idea to establish a student support fund that would assist financially disadvantaged students arose. A committee was formed comprising three representatives from the affiliated union members
via the Trades Hall and representatives from The Gordon.

The modest initial deposit has grown over the past 28 years through sponsorship and fund raising, and has established itself as an approved charitable fund that distributes an average of 200 monetary grants per year.

Objectives

The aim of the Student Support Fund is to encourage financial support from the community
including unions, industry and business, to assist students in financial need who are enrolled at The Gordon. Monetary grants are allocated to students who are struggling to pay for course related expenses such as enrolment fees, materials, books, on campus rent, and/or food, to enable them to continue studying.

Administration

The Student Support Fund is managed on behalf of the Gordon by the Student Scholarships and
Welfare Coordinator. To maintain the longevity of the program, funds to each student are typically
capped at $200, and are allocated on a needs basis. The students who receive these grants are in financial crisis and have sought help through the Student Counselling Unit at the Gordon. Most are in receipt of government pensions or benefits, and are trying to improve their outcomes by obtaining a tertiary qualification.

The grants are paid directly onto the course related expenses, enabling students to continue with their education and succeed in reaching towards their career goals.

"I would like to thank the student support fund committee for all the hard work they do not only helping me but all the students they support. Without their help and generosity they have shown me I may not have found myself in the position I am today.”
