Growing the Health and Community Services Workforce

   

Building capacity in the fast growing Community Services and Health sectors.

This is a school based program combining awareness raising initiatives with accredited courses to foster entry level pathways to employment in the Community Services and Health sectors – the fastest growing employment sectors in the Geelong region.

The Program is delivered by the Geelong Region Local Learning and Employment Network with a community inclusion element supporting students from a range of disadvantaged backgrounds.

Fast Facts:

  • 617 students were enrolled in School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships and VET in School courses over 2015 and 2017 with a further 21
    currently enrolled for 2018

  • 1201 students were engaged in either accredited or non-accredited courses over 2014 and 2016

  • An average of 67.5% of participants across all programs were from disadvantaged backgrounds over 2015 - 2017

  • Accredited training qualifications delivered:

  • Certificate III in Community Services

  • Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance (partial completion)

  • Certificate III in Health Services Assistance

  • Certificate III in Laboratory Skills

  • Certificate III in Individual Support (Aged Care)

  • Awareness raising programs include:

  • Experience Community Services program

  • Year 10 Taster Program

  • School Leavers Program

  • ​Work experience at St John of God

  • Work experience at Barwon Health

  • Careers in Health Taster for students with a disability

  • 88% student completion rate for accredited programs in 2015-2017

  • Stakeholders / partners in the program:

  • 25 Secondary Schools

  • 41 employers supporting the School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships

  • 44 employers supporting the VET in Schools program

  • 49 industry partners 

Highlights

Of those students undertaking accredited courses, many of whom were from disadvantaged backgrounds, the completion rate was a highly creditable 91% in 2016 and 86% in 2017 which reflects not only the determination of the cohort but also the welfare support of the delivery agent, partner agencies industry partners, schools and The Gordon.
