World of Work (WoW)

The World of Work programs offer senior secondary students immersive experiences in burgeoning industries within the region. These initiatives serve as a source of inspiration and engagement, providing valuable insights into employment opportunities and the dynamics of the professional world. Specifically tailored for year 10 and 11 students as a seamless progression from the GTFP program, these programs aim to guide and empower students in making informed decisions about their post-school pathways. By fostering awareness of careers in industries of regional significance, both students and teachers are better equipped to explore direct employment, TAFE, and University options. The overarching vision for Skilling the Bay is to contribute to the development of a regionally educated, skilled workforce adept at navigating a dynamic and evolving economy.

The key objectives of the World of Work programs include promoting employment opportunities and pathway programs, inspiring and engaging young minds to pursue rewarding and successful careers. Through industry tours, employer panels, and career discussions, students gain direct access to the professional world. The programs also aim to heighten awareness of the diverse career options within specific industry streams, facilitated by collaborations with an array of industry partners. The World of Work Program will focus on exploring significant industry streams in our region, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the various career pathways available.

 

Health and Community Services

Delivered in collaboration with the Geelong Region Local Learning and Employment Network (GRLLEN)

The Health and Community Services Program offers a unique opportunity for students to delve into the dynamic realm of healthcare and community services. Designed to provide hands-on experience, the program includes immersive visits to workplaces, allowing students to witness firsthand the daily operations of various health and community service settings. By engaging with professionals in the field, students gain valuable insights into the diverse career pathways available and the essential employability skills required for success in these sectors. From communication and teamwork to problem-solving and empathy, the program not only imparts practical knowledge but also equips students with the foundational skills crucial for a fulfilling and impactful career in health and community services. 

 

Government and Professional Services

Engaging with large government and professional services employers in the region

Skilling the Bay has developed a program to promote the extensive roles available within the Government and Professional Services sector and the number of entry points to start your career. Geelong is a hub for some of the largest government organisations in the region, offering a rich landscape of employment options, catering to individuals with different skills, interests, and career aspirations.

A multitude of jobs across various industries and skill levels are available in local councils, statutory authorities, or corporate government at the state, territory, or federal level.  Government departments and professional organisations can offer traineeships, apprenticeships, entry-level roles, and graduate programs.

 

Digital Technologies

An introduction to digital technology roles, which are pervasive across all industries.

In today’s rapidly evolving world, digital technology has become an indispensable tool across all careers, transcending boundaries and revolutionising traditional practices. It enhances efficiency, creativity, and communication in virtually every field. From data analysis and project management to marketing and design, software and tools make complex tasks simpler, allowing individuals to focus on higher-level problem-solving and innovation. This program aims to illuminate the diverse pathways that digital technology careers offer, showcasing the exciting possibilities available to students.

 

Visitor Economy

Learn about the career amazing opportunities in the Visitor Economy

The Visitor Economy encompasses all industries that breathe life into tourism; including accommodation, hospitality, retail, arts, and recreation. Together, these sectors foster a vibrant community, supporting 33,500 jobs and injecting over $1.5 billion into the local economy.* The Visitor Economy offers jobs for those starting their career journey while still at school, through to senior management roles.

Creative Industries

Geelong has a vibrant creative collective

Creative industries include a mix of sectors spanning arts, culture, screen, design, publishing and advertising. Skilling the Bay has partnered with the Geelong Art Gallery to deliver an immersive experience that enlightens students about the myriad of pathways available for pursuing careers in this exciting field. By delving into Geelong's Creative Industries, the program aims to inspire and empower students, guiding them towards exciting opportunities within this vibrant and thriving sector.

 

Clean Economy

New in 2024 – Delivered by the Geelong Manufacturing Council

The Clean Economy sector encompasses a wide array of industries including renewable energy, circular economy, waste management and eco-conscious manufacturing. To meet the ambitious targets set by the Victorian Governments many new workers are going to be needed. By participating in the Clean Economy Program students will gain a deep understanding of the careers available and the critical role these industries play in delivering a sustainable future. Students will gain an understanding of the pathways into these exciting new jobs that will contribute to a healthier planet.

 

Building Careers

New to Skilling the Bay in 2024 – Delivered by the Geelong Region Local Learning and Employment Network

The construction industry is an essential to Victoria’s economic prosperity and provides diverse employment opportunities which intersect closely with other industries such as manufacturing and civil construction. Ranked among the top 5 industries, construction is experiencing significant growth, fueled by the Victorian Government's initiatives such as the Big Build and Home Builder programs. The Building Careers Program will offer students a comprehensive understanding of the construction industry's intricacies. Unveiling the keys to success, we aim to guide students through the wealth of career options available and illuminate the pathways that lead to a fulfilling and prosperous future in construction.
