Entry requirements

  • Attending a secondary school.
  • Applicants are required to be aged 15 years and over.
  • Literacy and numeracy level equivalent to the successful completion of Year 9.
  • Review the personal learning requirements essential to this course and discuss with your school VET Coordinator before you apply.

You will learn

  • How to shampoo hair and perform basin services to industry standards.
  • Greet, prepare and communicate professionally with salon clients.
  • Dry and style hair using industry techniques and equipment.
  • Recommend and sell salon products and services to customers.
  • Work effectively in a salon environment while maintaining workplace health and safety standards.

Course outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, you will receive:

  • Recognition of up to four VCE VET units at Units 1 and 2 level.
  • Certificate II in Salon Assistant qualification.

Hairdressing Student kit: $320 

Students are required to purchase a professional hairdressing kit to support practical training. The kit includes:

  • VETDSS Hair Makeup and Beauty T-shirt from Hip Pocket
  • Flat, closed toe shoes 
  • Black pants suitable for program activities

Students are required to bring the materials listed below:

  • Basic stationery (e.g. pens, notebooks)
  • Personal organisation materials as required

Assessment is based on

  • Observations and practical demonstrations
  • Questioning 
  • Product (reports, projects, role plays etc.) 
  • Workplace evidence

    Work placement/Structured Workplace Learning (SWL)



    Duration & Structure

    40 hours with a minimum of 4 x 3-hour work periods.

    5 full days or 10 half days (for example, weekends, school holidays or term breaks).

    Location 

    Local and regional hairdressing or barbering salons.

    Organised by

    The student's secondary school.

    School Careers and VETDSS Coordinators assist students in securing their placement and completing the required Structured Workplace Learning Arrangement documentation. A signed Structured Workplace Learning Arrangement Form must be completed before placement commences.

    Additional requirements

  • All Structured Workplace Learning arrangements must be documented using the Structured Workplace Learning Arrangement Form.
  • The form must be signed by the employer, student, parent/guardian (if under 18 years of age) and the school Principal or Acting Principal before placement begins.
  • The teaching department must receive a copy of the completed SWL form.
