Entry requirements

  • Attending a secondary school.
  • Applicants are required to be aged 15 years and over.   
  • Literacy and numeracy level equivalent to the successful completion of Year 9.
  • Students selecting this course are recommended to have strong maths skills. 
  • Review the personal learning requirements essential to this course and discuss with your school VET Coordinator before you apply.

You will learn

  • Follow workplace health and safety procedures and apply safe work practices in an engineering workshop environment.
  • Read and interpret basic engineering drawings, plans, and measurements to support practical projects.
  • Develop foundational skills in machining, metal fabrication, and the use of engineering materials.
  • Safely operate a range of hand tools, power tools, and workshop equipment.
  • Plan, create, and complete practical engineering projects while building skills for future apprenticeships and engineering trade careers.

Course outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, you will receive:

  • Recognition of up to two VCE VET units at Units 1 and 2 level, and a VCE VET Units 3 and 4 sequence.
  • ATAR contribution: if you undertake scored assessment, will be eligible for an ATAR increment equivalent to 10% of the lowest study score from their Primary Four studies. 
  • Certificate II in Engineering Studies qualification.

  • Sketch and interpret portfolio A3workbook (supplied by The Gordon)
  • Personal Protective Equipment(PPE)– Students to supply their own
    • clearsafety glasses 
    • protective clothing– long sleeve overalls or long sleeve cotton drill shirt and pants& a hat
    • appropriate footwear– Steel-capped boots
  • USB–students to supply their own
  • Scientific calculator– students undertaking the scored assessment pathway require this for the year 2 exam. However,The Gordon also provides a class set for use in class for students not undertaking exam.

  • Tools and equipment for practical exercises- located in workshops
  • Safe Working Method Statements
  • The Gordon Library's online video catalogue to this video: Hand tools – safety and technique
  • Access to relevant plans, drawings and instructions and manufacturer's specifications/manuals

  • Microsoft office and CAD program Software 
  • OH&S policy and work procedures and instructions
  • Sketch Paper
  • 0.5mm Mechanical pencil
  • Drawing media and equipment i.e.: Eraser, ruler, sharpener, protractor & set squares

Assessment is based on

  • Questioning
  • Observations and practical demonstrations 
  • Portfolio (work samples)
  • Product (reports, projects, role plays etc)
