Entry requirements

  • Attending a secondary school.
  • Applicants are required to be aged 15 years and over.
  • Literacy and numeracy level equivalent to the successful completion of Year 9
  • Review the personal learning requirements essential to this course and discuss with your school VET Coordinator before you apply.

You will learn

  • Use furniture making hand and power tools safely in a simulated workshop environment.
  • Prepare materials, create timber joints and assemble furniture components.
  • Develop practical furniture making skills through hands-on projects.
  • Produce measurements, calculations and simple scale drawings used in industry.
  • Apply safe work practices, teamwork skills and environmentally sustainable workplace practices.

Course outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program you will receive:

  • Recognition of up to two VCE VET units at Units 1 and 2 level, and a VCE VET Units 3 and 4 sequence.
  • ATAR contribution: If you undertake scored assessment, the study score can contribute directly to the ATAR, either as one of your best four studies (the primary four) or as a fifth or sixth study increment. 
  • Certificate II in Furniture Making Pathways qualification.

Dress code and course materials

  • Industry specific PPE – Boots, long pants, long sleeve shirt, eye and ear protection
  • 1 x 450Set Square – large or 1 adjustable Set Square 
  • 1 x 300 - 600Set Square – large 
  • 2 x 2H Clutch Pencil including spare leads
  • 1 x Blue, Black and red ball point pen
  • 1 x Eraser
  • 1 x Scale Rule – Kent No. 62M
  • 1 x Compass (basic)

Assessment is based on

  • Questioning
  • Observations and practical demonstrations
  • Portfolio (work samples)
  • Product (reports, projects, role plays etc)
