Course description

The Safe Working Practice (SWP) Tutorial is designed to help to prepare you for the Safe Working Practice (SWP) Assessment. This being one of the 3 assessments that make up the Licensed Electrician's Assessment (LEA) to obtain an electrician's licence in Victoria. The SWP is designed to assess your ability to safely isolate, disconnect then reconnect electrical equipment.

Students suitable to complete the SWP tutorial are: Apprentices or Certificate III in Electrotechnology students that have completed all relevant units of competency and have a signed Authorisation to Undertake form from a Registered Training Organisation; or Electrician (Supervised) Licence (ES Class) for upgrade; or to obtain a Supervised Worker’s Licence (L Class); or Electrician’s (A Class) license. Required for REC Technical Assessment; or Offshore Technical Skills Record (OTSR) or Australian Recognised Trade Certificate (ARTC); or Expired licence and ESV has provided approval for you to sit the assessment.

Pre-Requisites and additional attendance information

Equipment used in tutorial and assessment: 

All candidates are required to supply an Insulation Resistance and Continuity Tester for the tutorial and subsequent assessment and which must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be a true moving coil meter;
  • Must be an analogue meter;
  • Not indicate pass/fail;
  • Show a minimum of 2 continuity scales;
  • Show a minimum of 250V/500V scales.

All candidates must present to the assessment with a pair of insulated LV rubber gloves with a minimum rating of 650 volts, marked with the relevant Australian Standard AS2225, IEC 903 or AS/NZS IEC 60903 and a pair of flame-resistant leather outers to provide mechanical protection. All other testing instruments and tools required for the SWP tutorial and assessment will be supplied by The Gordon, however, this does not stop you from providing your own tools.

WHS requirements for tutorial and assessment: 

You must wear the appropriate clothing and footwear to the tutorial and assessment. Section 11 of AS/NZS 4836:2023 requires:

  • long sleeves;
  • long pants;
  • clean covered footwear.

You will not be able to attend the tutorial or assessment if you are wearing clothing such as: shorts; a t-shirt; inappropriate footwear.
