Beyond the numbers lie great career opportunities

Accounting student working at Cottage by the SeaCrunching numbers may conjure dull visions of endless spreadsheets and the tap-tap-tap of a calculator. Yet, accounting graduates are finding pathways to exciting and unexpected careers.

Karen Woodhart undertook accounting at The Gordon to back up her years of experience managing the books and begin her own bookkeeping business.

“I had no intention of doing a diploma and absolutely no intention of going to uni!” shared Karen, who has completed a Bachelor of Commerce and works in the finance department at Cottage by the Sea.

“I wanted the ability to work my own hours and for myself. A chat with my teacher at The Gordon made me think that I could go on to university. I had never believed myself capable beforehand.”

The accounting courses at The Gordon provide students with the skills they need to commence work in the industry and credit points towards a degree. For Karen, a temporary role while studying has become a permanent passion.

“I cannot tell you how much I love working at Cottage by the Sea. I am still learning each day. Working at the Cottage is so much more than a job. It is a privilege. I am grateful for every day, and it is a job that I probably would not have been considered for had I not just finished my courses at The Gordon,” said Karen.

“My teachers were great and very encouraging. I completed a diploma as part of the government’s Free TAFE program and, with several other students, went on to university to complete a degree.”

Alana Spencer, accounting teacher at The Gordon, believes the TAFE was the perfect place for Karen to start her bookkeeping and accounting journey.

“The Gordon allowed Karen to return to study in a safe and supported environment, where she gained knowledge and confidence. It allowed her to create friendships and a support group that assisted her in her study and encouraged her to continue her higher education. In addition, she gained skills that led her to a bookkeeping role while she continued her studies at Deakin University,” said Alana.

Moira Wilcox, finance and fundraising manager at Cottage by the Sea, said, “Karen has been a great addition to our team. The practical skills she gained through her course at The Gordon meant that she could hit the ground running in her role with Cottage. Karen shows a consistent desire to learn and is a great support to us all here.”
