For some people, a career in Engineering seems too far us of reach but at The Gordon, there are accessible pathways to Engineering Degrees.
Recently, Diploma of Engineering students were invited by Deakin University to take a tour of the Waurn Ponds campus engineering facilities to see the Deakin Engineering student's final year showcase their projects.
The Gordon students had the opportunity to see what University had in store for them and allowed them to chat with students and ask questions about the course, their projects, and what they enjoyed about their course.
The Gordon offers a guaranteed pathway for Engineering Diploma students to transition into the second year of the Engineering Bachelor at Deakin, allowing our students 12 months of hands-on experience at a lower fee.
Teacher Ollie Buckley and boiler maker by trade, started his engineering journey at The Gordon and felt TAFE was a great pathway. His teachers encouraged him to further his studies into a diploma and then into a bachelor at Deakin and he now wants to encourage his students to do the same.
Buckley says “Through my first few years at The Gordon, I gained hands-on experience which made the transition to Deakin easy.” After many years working within the industry, Ollie is now back at The Gordon teaching and encouraging the next generation of engineers.
Students have the opportunity to undertake their chosen preference of Engineering from civil, mechanical, and electrical to mechatronics. A year 12 pass or an ATAR is not required to enter the course at TAFE and offers the perfect pathway into second-year engineering at Deakin.
Gordon Student Dan Ochieng is keen to take up the opportunity to pathway to Deakin through his diploma as his ATAR was not quite high enough to go straight into the Bachelor at Deakin. He was among many students finishing year 12 during COVID-19. Dan states “I feel it has been the best outcome for me. The diploma has given me hands-on experience that I would not have otherwise had, and feel that I have an advantage when I step into second year.”
It’s never too late, the beauty of TAFE is you can use our certificates and diplomas as a stepping stone into your dream career with shorter courses and lower fees at any age.
Marcus Kar was working in the civil industry, completing a trade apprenticeship for a year. He was looking so something more fulfilling with his career choices and entered the Diploma. “After some research into other alternative careers, I chose The Gordon as the fees are lower for the first year so I knew my HECs debt would be less” said Marcus.
Applications are open for a February start. Visit thegordon.edu.au for more information.
