Course description

This course is designed for tradespeople seeking a restricted electrical license to safely disconnect and reconnect low voltage (LV) fixed-wired electrical equipment. Ideal for qualified plumbers, mechanical fitters, and refrigeration and air-conditioning mechanics, this training equips you with the skills and knowledge required to perform electrical disconnection and reconnection tasks in compliance with regulatory requirements. Gain practical, hands-on experience and enhance your capabilities within your trade.

Pre-Requisites and additional attendance information

All candidates will be required to provide their own testing and measuring equipment, hand tools, and lock out kits, a pair of insulated LV rubber gloves with a minimum rating of 650 volts, with a pair of leather outers for mechanical protection.

Delivery and Assessment

Topics include:

  • Isolating Low Voltage electrical supplies
  • Selecting and using testing and measuring devices
  • Disconnecting and reconnecting electrical equipment
  • Terminating and connecting cables and conductors in accordance with Australian Standards
  • Completing required reporting

A total of 2 units of competency must be attained.

Test Equipment

ALL candidates are required to supply their own Insulation Resistance and Continuity Tester for this assessment and must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be a true Moving coil instrument
  • Must be an Analogue Meter
  • No Pass/Fail indication
  • Minimum of 2 continuity scales Ω/MΩ
  • Minimum of 2 voltage scales 250v/500v

These requirements will be discussed at the first class.

Licencing Requirements

The Restricted Electrical Workers Licence (REL) Class 2 will not be automatically issued on completing the course. Candidates will be required to book and undertake a practical independent assessment at the end of the course. Successful candidates must apply to Energy Safe Victoria with all documentation and fees.  Refer to the Energy Safe Victoria website for further details.
