Culinary student wins silver!
Gordon commercial cookery student Pippa Macpherson has taken out silver at the recent AUS-TAFE regional culinary competition.
The second-year apprentice represented the TAFE at the prized event which sees students competing individually to prepare, cook and display a range of ingredients.
“When I won the award, I was shocked. I wasn’t expecting to get anything let alone a silver medal” shared Ms Macpherson.
“I always loved cooking and baking and my family and friends suggested I should study this course. I have really enjoyed learning all the new techniques and the teachers are so nice and helpful.
“My training has prepared me well for this competition and shown me other opportunities that are out there. Moving forward I am looking to complete my apprenticeship, take part in more competitions and maybe even run my own restaurant”, continued Ms Macpherson.
Tommy Barr, cookery teacher at The Gordon, trained the talented student in the month leading up to the event, “The competition gives students a good benchmark on where their training is at. Students are challenged on their practical skills, which in turn can give them confidence that they are at a level to compete against the best.
“I was very impressed with Pippa’s achievement as she is very shy. With her experience this year, she will be ready for any future competitions.”
Participants were required to prepare and cook a two-egg omelette with cheese, clean and fillet a whole fish, cooking and displaying two portions, while finishing with deboning a whole chicken and preparing, cooking and displaying two portions.
