In the peaceful surroundings of Highton Gardens Care Community, there's a strong sense of kindness and understanding. Diana Pasos is at the heart of this warmth. Her own experience of caring for her great grandmother in Colombia inspired her to study aged care when she came to Australia 14 years ago.
Diana faced challenges balancing high school studies while caring for her great grandmother, who had Alzheimer’s disease, but she managed her schedule so she could be with her all day. Diana loves spending time with the elderly, bringing them comfort and joy.
“In Colombia, I juggled high school while caring for my great grandmother, who suffered from advanced Alzheimer’s. I had to plan my day from early morning to late afternoon and decided to finish my last three years of high school during the evening so I could provide full-time care for her.”
For Diana, there is no greater reward than meeting and learning from those who have walked this earth before her time, referring to community residents as ‘friends’. Her presence radiates warmth and comfort to all who cross her path.
“I enjoy being involved in the community, visiting, and caring for the elderly in aged care communities. Talking to the elderly, listening to them and helping them. It’s fascinating for me to have the opportunity to meet a wide variety of people, and to learn from them, a whole range of life’s knowledge and skills gained over a lifetime.”
Diana’s manager, Shaun Nicholls from Opal Healthcare, commends her for enriching Highton Gardens Care Community with her unique character and beaming smile.
“Diana is an incredible asset to our team. She has impacted our community in beautiful ways that go far beyond just doing her job. Sometimes she comes in on a day off to teach our residents Spanish, paint their nails, or just chat with them over a cup of tea or coffee. She has a genuine passion for aged care and makes our people feel special. Diana perfectly represents the outstanding level of quality and training we consistently see shining through from The Gordon’s students,” he said.
Teacher, Christine Davy, also praises Diana’s dedication and compassionate nature.
“Despite personal adversity during her studies, Diana persevered, demonstrating the qualities essential in the aged care industry. Her blend of resilience, determination, and compassion exemplifies The Gordon's mission to produce exceptional graduates.”
Diana recently accepted the Health and Science category award at The Gordon Awards for Excellence night, recognising her exceptional commitment to studying aged care.
Diana’s story conclusively illuminates the world of aged care, putting aside stigmas and reminding us of the profound impact one individual can make within our community, showcasing a unique career that can instil a sense of purpose and create meaningful memories and connections that last a lifetime.
