The disability stream prepares you for working with people with disabilities in a community or residential setting. You will learn to communicate and work in health or community services, provide individualised Support, recognise healthy body systems, work with diverse people, support independence and wellbeing, follow safe work practices and work legally and ethically.

Individual Support has two specialisations, disability and ageing. You can choose either course to improve your employment opportunities.

Work placement/industry experience

140 hours of work placement is required in this course, organised by The Gordon. Students will complete placement over 4 weeks, 5 days per week. 80 Hours will be from 7.00am - 3.00pm in an Aged Care Facility. 60 hours will be in Disability Services with varied shift time. Placement is not paid work and students will not receive payment for undertaking practical placement. A current police check is required. The uniform is navy blue scrub top, including black/navy pants/scrub pants and flat non-slip fully enclosed shoes. As per worker vaccination requirements, all applicants for this course must be triple vaccinated (boosted) against COVID-19 prior to undertaking placement which is a requirement for completion of this course. They are also required to have an up to date Flu vaccination as well. Students are required to provide evidence of full vaccination status, including booster dose, as part of their placement documentation which is provided to placement facilities. Students that cannot provide valid evidence will not be able to complete placement and therefore unable to complete this course.

  • Applicants are expected to have literacy skills at Year 11 or Year 12 or Australian Core Skills Framework Level 3 and numeracy skills at Year 10 or Year 11 or Australian Core Skills Framework Level 2.

  • You must reside in Victoria to access Victorian Government Subsidised Fees and any incentive such as Free TAFE. Full fees apply to all non-Victorian residents.

Work placement requirements

  • Applicants are required to hold a current Working with Children Check.
  • Applicants are required to undergo a Police Check.
  • Applicants must provide annual Influenza and Covid vaccination evidence as per guidelines of Department of Education and Training.
  • Applicants are required to complete 120 hours of work placement as part of the performance evidence in the core unit, CHCCCS023 Support independence and wellbeing.
  • Applicants are required to undergo a NDIS Screening check.

Pre-training review

Each student must complete a pre-training review as part of their application. The outcome of your pre-training review assists our teachers and trainers to better understand your capabilities prior to training and enables you to be matched to the right program. Please note that the listed electives are delivered by The Gordon but you may not need to complete all of these units to successfully complete this qualification. If you have previously completed any of the units of competency relevant to this course, you may be eligible for Credit Transfer (CT).
