Course description

This popular course will equip you with the knowledge and practical skills you need to register as an enrolled nurse or create a pathway to university. 

Our experienced team of trainers will teach you about anatomy and physiology, communication skills, medical terminology, infection control, legal and ethical issues associated with nursing, nursing patients with complex needs, administering medications, and nursing patients with mental health needs. Our partnerships with Barwon Health, St John of God Hospital, and other healthcare providers also provide excellent work placement and employment opportunities. 

This course is accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). Upon completing your studies, you will be eligible to register as an enrolled nurse with the NMBA.

How often do I attend?

Classes are scheduled Monday – Friday | 3 days per week (changing each semester) | between the hours of 8.00am and 8.00pm.

Students can expect to be on campus on average 20 hours per week. Semester breaks will be scheduled into the timetable.

Course Delivery

The Diploma of Nursing is predominantly delivered face-to-face in the classroom, with some theoretical classes delivered online through the Zoom platform. The course is structured in this way due to the practical nature of nursing, with online classes to support the theoretically underpinning knowledge.

Entrance requirements

Academic:

Successful completion of Australian Year 12 or equivalent – Equivalents can be found on our Entry Requirements page.

English:

You must be able to demonstrate that you meet the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia’s (NMBA) English language skills registration standard.

  • You must be 18 years or over at the time of course commencement.

Personal Learning Requirements

There are personal learning requirements for each qualification at The Gordon. These are essential personal capabilities and skills required to successfully complete the course and be ready to work in the industry.

Work placement requirements

  • Students must attend a minimum of 400 hours of placement. Placement is completed over 11 weeks (blocks duration of 2-3 weeks). Each student’s attendance hours on each placement are recorded, and students are required to do makeup placement hours where the minimum 400 hours will not be met.

   The Gordon will organise workplace experience for students through partnerships or In place (software program for data collection and  allocation of placement).

  • You will complete 11 weeks of full-time placement, in 2-3 full-week blocks with a combination of both morning and afternoon shifts rostered.
  • Placement may occur during semester break. Placement is not paid work and students will not receive payment for undertaking practical placement.
  • You must obtain a current police check and a Working with Children Check and NDIS workers screening prior to commencing your placement.
  • The uniform is a Gordon top; blue pants and flat non-slip shoes should be worn.
  • All facilities attended during Professional Experience Placement (PEP) are accredited under the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards. This includes public and private hospitals, day procedure services, and public healthcare practices, with accreditation administered by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (ACSQHC).
  • *Placement locations may be anywhere across Victoria, and students are expected to travel as required. PEP placements are organised by The Gordon’s placement team in approved healthcare settings.

  *Any travel including accommodation costs and parking fees is at the student's own cost.

  • Vaccinations: Students are required by industry to have been vaccinated against certain diseases and must provide an up-to-date vaccination record including evidence of full vaccination status*.

These vaccinations and screenings are at the student's own arrangement and cost. 

  • Annual influenza (flu) vaccine 
  • Hepatitis B: primary course of 3 vaccination doses AND serology to confirm anti-HBV level is greater than or equal to 10mlU/ml 
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR, 2 vaccination doses AND blood test (serology report) to confirm immunity 
  • Diphtheria/Tetanus/Pertussis (dTpa – adult dose), must be this immunisation NOT ADT (ADT - Adult Diphtheria/Tetanus – does not contain the pertussis component) 
  • Varicella: 2 vaccination doses OR blood test (Serology report) to confirm immunity OR history of chickenpox 
  • Tuberculin Screen: Tuberculin Skin Test OR QuantiFERON TB Assay blood test (serology) to show immunity
  • Triple vaccination against COVID-19. To ensure students are eligible to attend the widest range of placements and avoid disruption to their placement allocation, all nursing students are required to maintain up-to-date COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of enrolment and placement, in line with health service and clinical placement provider requirements.    

*Please note: All Relevant compliance check, vaccinations, serology and screening fees are the responsibility of the student.
