Deciding what to do after school can feel overwhelming. But for Will Martin-Alcaide, starting a school-based apprenticeship while still at secondary school turned out to be the perfect first step. While completing his studies, Will started on the tools - learning the trade, earning an income and setting himself up for a strong future in the construction industry.
His story is just one example of the many pathways available through apprenticeships and traineeships - opportunities that will be showcased at the upcoming Apprenticeship and Traineeship Forum on Wednesday 30 July at The Gordon’s East Geelong Campus.
This free event brings together local employers, training providers and support services to help young people, jobseekers, and career changers explore training and employment options across industries such as building trades, business, hospitality, beauty, health, and much more.
Attendees will have the chance to explore career options, speak directly with industry experts, and receive advice on how to get started.
Now in his second-year of his apprenticeship, Will has successfully transitioned from school to full-time work while continuing his apprenticeship training through The Gordon. He works for his father’s company, Proframe Victoria and says his upbringing played a big part in his decision to pursue the trade.
“My dad’s a carpenter, and I’ve been around his business since I was a kid.” Will said. “I used to go to work with him during the school holidays, so I picked up a lot before I even started my apprenticeship.”
Combining school and work helped him grow both personally and professionally.
What I liked about it was that you’re learning a trade and making money, but you’re also still at school with your mates. It’s a good balance.

Beyond learning technical skills, Will says his apprenticeship has helped him understand how to manage a business and work with people.
“Being part of the business has taught me how to manage people, keep things running smoothly, and make sure everyone’s happy on site” he said.
Looking ahead, Will plans to continue his studies and eventually take on a leadership role.
Will’s experience highlights that there’s not just one linear path to career opportunities.
The upcoming forum will feature a panel of speakers, including representatives from Apprenticeship Victoria, The Gordon, gforce, Apprenticeship Support Australia, LoomTex and real apprentices and trainees sharing their experiences and tips. The panel will offer insights into how apprenticeships and traineeships work, what employers are looking for, and how to take the first step.
This event is about opening doors. Vocational training can lead to secure, meaningful careers and this is the perfect place to ask questions, meet the right people, and explore your options. We’ve brought together as many voices and services as possible, all in one room, to help you take your next step.

Will encourages others to give it a go.
“Stick to it and trust the process. There’ll be tough days, but it’s worth it. If you want to learn how to work hard and earn your money, an apprenticeship is definitely the right path for you."
