As part of a $55m TAFE Asset Maintenance Program, The Gordon received almost $3m for refurbishment projects from the Andrews government. This has allowed for the upgrade of leading edge technology to advance the skills of industry, ensuring students are job ready.
At The Gordon, the Automotive department located at the Institute’s East Geelong Campus, recently welcomed the replacement of two automotive spray booths. The newly acquired acquisition offers a multitude of safe, sustainable and economic advantages, however the true winners are the students.
The intelligent design improves air flow to assist with waterborne drying technologies and fume extraction. This results in quicker drying times, allowing students to complete more practical modules in shorter time frames throughout their training. Glass encased, instructors are also able to perform real life demonstrations to enhance learning experiences and outcomes on practical tasks.
The increased vehicle work space offered by the larger spray cabins and mixing rooms are ergonomically designed and incorporate adjustable hanging rails for painting parts. Improved visual and LED lighting capabilities provide better viewing for topcoat applications and supervision, while the internal hydraulic ramps and the reduced power consumption enhances the safety and sustainability of the project. Fitted with Magnehelic cabin pressure gauges and an integrated filter replacement warning gauge, the technology meets the latest in industry standards.
The recently completed project is an important investment for the ongoing skill development of students undertaking apprentice and pre-apprentice training in vehicle body repairs. Collison repair teacher, Peter Jakubzik explained, “The new custom designed Truflow spray booths and mixing room will add many benefits to the apprentice experience with the state of the art ovens and mixing room giving the students a look at the latest technologies available.”
Excited that The Gordon has been able to provide the most modern and up to date training facilities to students, Mr Jakubzik acknowledges that with the latest equipment, tools and paint products, students are expected to grow their basic skills very quickly. Working on donated projects as well as cars for simulated clients, students gain real experience while perfecting their trade.
The Gordon boasts an impressive record of developing students who are highly skilled at body repair and refinishing works, having triumphed at the past seven consecutive Victorian State colour matching competitions delivered by PPG. Looking good to maintain their reign, The Gordon will now seek to improve on their successes at the national level.
