Students from The Gordon’s Certificate I in Work Education and Transition Education classes are making a real difference in the Geelong community, volunteering their time to support The Outpost, a local organisation that provides meals, care and connection for people doing it tough.
As part of their learning experience, students recently helped serve meals and collect food donations to support The Outpost’s mission of empowering lives through compassionate support. The initiative has given students the opportunity to develop practical skills while experiencing the positive impact of community service firsthand.
Alana Spencer, the Portfolio Manager for Education and Training, said the experience highlights the value of hands-on learning with a purpose.
At The Gordon, we encourage our students to engage with their community in meaningful ways. By supporting The Outpost, our students are not only gaining confidence and practical experience, but also learning the importance of empathy, teamwork and giving back.
The Outpost, located in Geelong, provides essential services to those in need, offering meals, support and a welcoming space for individuals experiencing hardship or homelessness.
During November, Gordon students are also running a food drive across the City Campus to collect canned goods, snacks and other essentials for The Outpost’s pantry.
Ms Spencer said the project has been deeply rewarding for students and staff alike.
“It’s wonderful to see our students embrace these opportunities with enthusiasm and kindness,” she said.
“They’ve experienced firsthand how small acts of generosity can make a big difference in someone’s day.”
The Gordon’s partnership with The Outpost reflects the TAFE’s ongoing commitment to social responsibility and helping students develop not only skills for employment but also values that strengthen the wider community.
Members of the public are encouraged to support the initiative by donating non-perishable food items, nutritious snacks, or pantry essentials throughout November. Donations can be dropped off at The Gordon’s Customer Service Centre, City Campus, with all contributions going directly to The Outpost to help those most in need.
