When Kate Nguyen decided to pursue her passion for hospitality, she knew she needed more than theory, she wanted real-world experience. After working in the industry and dreaming of owning her own business, Kate discovered The Gordon during an Info Night session. “They provide hands-on experiences and have amazing facilities that help students achieve their skills for the future,” she said. That was the moment she chose a life in Geelong and The Gordon as her next step.
Living in Geelong has been a highlight for Kate. “I fell in love with the location, the beautiful beaches, parks and walking trails. Plus, it’s close to Melbourne, so I can enjoy the best of both worlds,” she shares.
Kate’s favourite part of her course? The practical learning and passionate teachers. “They have years of experience and inspire us every day. I started without knowing how to cook, and now I can create dishes with multiple elements. The excursions and hands-on units make learning exciting and world-class.”
Kate has embraced the region and is a proud Study Geelong ambassador, connecting with other students and building friendships through events like laser quest and group dinners. Studying at The Gordon she’s also gained the opportunity to work at events, including celebration dinners, Geelong’s Longest Lunch and most recently The Gordon’s Feast and Flicks, gaining invaluable experience and confidence.
Currently working at Hanoi Kitchen in Barwon Heads, Kate applies her skills and passion for Vietnamese cuisine in a commercial setting. Her ultimate dream? Opening her own coffee shop in Geelong. “I love the smell of coffee, the sound of the steamer and creating a space where people feel at home.” Next step in her journey is a year in Sydney, immersing herself in the culture and working in some of the country’s finest restaurants.
“If you love cookery or hospitality, The Gordon is for you. With experienced teachers and practical learning, you’ll gain the confidence and skills to turn your dreams into reality.”
