Students sharpening their skills for the community

2025-05-19

Aspiring barbers and hairdressers from The Gordon have taken to the streets, offering free and low-cost haircuts in a bold initiative that combines community service with invaluable experience with real clients.

As part of their hands-on training at The Gordon, the barbering and hairdressing students are sharpening their skills outside the classroom—bringing fresh fades and clean cuts directly to the Geelong community.

Preparing for the workforce and nearing the completion of their training, these students are not only welcoming clients into their on-campus classroom and salon at The Gordon’s City campus but are also taking their skills on the road — visiting locations such as the GenU Hub on 20 May and The Gordon’s East Geelong Campus on 3 June.

Barbering under the expert supervision of Ben Pratt, an award-winning barber with over 20 years of experience, the students are gaining valuable real-world practice while supporting the community with professional grooming services.

These free pop-up events support the community, especially those facing homelessness, unemployment, cost-of-living challenges, or disabilities. It’s a rewarding way for students to practice and make a difference at the same time.

The Gordon’s Hairdressing students are also working outside traditional classroom environments, giving free haircuts to those in need at One Hope Community Care in Geelong West every 6 weeks.

In addition to the free pop-up events, the public can book low-cost services at The Studio at The Gordon’s City campus.

The Studio is a fully equipped training salon where future barbers, hairdressers, and beauty therapists perfect their craft. Operated by talented students and apprentices, and supervised by experienced industry professionals, the salon offers high-quality services at significantly reduced prices.

Whether you’re looking for the latest styles or professional beauty treatments, The Studio provides a welcoming environment for all. Conveniently located off Little Malop Street, the salon is open to everyone seeking affordable and top-notch services.

According to Ben, “Barbering’s bigger than ever, with barbershops everywhere and men taking better care of themselves. It’s a trendy, creative industry perfect for those wanting a dynamic career and I highly recommend becoming a barber today!”

For those keen to hone their own skills with hair, The Gordon offers a range of courses spanning Barbering and Hairdressing.
