The future of trades is changing, and at The Gordon, more women than ever are picking up the tools and building strong foundations for careers in traditionally male-dominated industries.
With a steady increase in female applications across a range of trade courses, The Gordon is seeing the impact of targeted efforts to open doors for women in construction, automotive, engineering and more.
We’re proud to be seeing a rise in interest from women across both formal qualifications and short, non-accredited life skills courses,
Andrew Bugeja, Director of Education Excellence – Industry, Trades & Environment at The Gordon.
“This growth reflects a broader shift — more women are curious, capable, and ready to explore careers in trades.” continued Andrew.
While many areas of trade training have welcomed more women in recent years, The Gordon is seeing particular momentum in its Electrical programs — especially within the VETDSS (Vocational Education and Training Delivered to Secondary Students), pre-apprenticeship, and apprenticeship streams.
Horticulture also continues to lead the way, with women making up more than a quarter of apprenticeship enrolments in the field — one of the highest female representation rates across all trades.
Women at The Gordon currently participate in trades including: Carpentry, Plumbing, Cabinet Making & Joinery, Bricklaying, Painting & Decorating, Automotive, Collision Repair, Engineering, Electrical and Horticulture.
“We know the numbers are still low in some trades,” Mr Bugeja said.
“That’s why we’re making it a strategic priority to boost female participation through real-world solutions.”
From hands-on life skills courses to industry collaboration, The Gordon is leading the charge with innovative programs designed to welcome, support, and retain women in trade training.
In September 2024, The Gordon launched its first Women in Automotive Life Skills course, introducing 12 participants to practical automotive skills while building confidence in vehicle maintenance — both for personal use and future careers.
Following this success, new women-focused foundational courses in Carpentry, Electrical, and Plumbing are being planned for late 2025 and early 2026. These will serve as stepping stones for women interested in exploring a trade career or simply gaining DIY confidence.
And there’s more to come.
The Gordon’s Building and Construction Portfolio is preparing to launch women-only trade taster workshops, to be held free of charge and outside standard business hours. These practical sessions will provide a safe, inclusive environment for women to test-drive tools and skills — all while being guided by expert trainers.
We’re not just opening the door — we’re creating new ones. These workshops will be not-for-profit, but high-impact. It’s about sparking new journeys and helping women see themselves as part of the trade workforce.

Recognising that training is only part of the equation, The Gordon is also establishing a female trades mentoring network, set to connect students with role models, provide guidance, and foster a strong sense of community.
The Gordon is exploring partnerships with local women-led businesses — such as all-female plumbing companies — and other professional mentoring services to further support students on their pathway to qualification and employment.
Crucially, The Gordon is working closely with industry through its Geelong Construction Skills Council. This advisory body, made up of builders, industry leaders, and government, is focused on removing barriers to apprenticeship completion — with one of its top priorities being to increase female participation in trades across the Barwon region.
“It’s not just about getting women into trades — it’s about keeping them there,” Mr Bugeja added. “That means inclusive workplaces, strong support systems, and clear, safe employment pathways. We’re committed to making that a reality.”
Whether you're a school student thinking ahead, a career-changer exploring options, or simply curious about DIY — The Gordon offers a wide range of short courses, pre-apprenticeships, and full qualifications across all major trades.
With expert trainers, strong industry connections, and a growing community of women paving their own way, now’s the time to reach for the tools — and build the future you want.
